RHD (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease) is found throughout the UK and can be highly fatal to unvaccinated rabbits. RHD in particular is highly infectious and contagious. It can be spread by direct and indirect contact with infected rabbits and by biting insects.
There is now a new strain present in the UK known as RHD-2 for which the current vaccine does not provide protection. The disease can produce a wide range of clinical signs from gut stasis to rapid death.
There is a vaccine available but it is not licenced for use in the UK and needs to be imported from the continent. We are in the process of trying to obtain the vaccine and will provide a further update as soon as possible.
